Elwood Staffing Campus- New Headquarters Building

Corporate Office Building

Columbus, Indiana

2018

This new headquarters building of 28,000 s.f. is located on a suburban site adjacent to the owner’s existing office building, also designed by LJA. The buildings are joined by a shared courtyard and landscape and use compatible materials, creating a harmonious corporate campus.

The new building is brick-clad with limestone and steel detailing. Trellises shade upper-level terraces and the expansive glazing, controlling heat gain and glare.

Interiors, also designed by the architect, consist of open work areas arranged around a core of spaces like private offices and conference rooms. The exposed structure contrasts with the refined finish of special items like the steel, ash and walnut stair, wood screen wall and other items. The furnishings and extensive art program lend color and visual interest to the interior.

MacBeath Hardwood Headquarters

Corporate Headquarters

Edinburgh, Indiana

2017

A modestly-scaled office building in a mixed context of single family houses and very large industrial buildings. The well-proportioned simple volume is clad in metal as a nod to its neighbors, with thermally-modifed Yellow Poplar used for detail. The thermally-modified wood is one of the owner’s products and its use here was one of the first in the United States.

Indiana University Center for Art and Design (IUCAD)

Interior Renovation

Columbus, Indiana

2012

An interior renovation of commercial space in the former Commons Mall building, designed by Cesar Pelli (1973). IUCAD included gallery, studio, shop and office space and was the first outpost of Indiana University, Bloomington in its developing alliance with the Columbus community. Completed on a very modest budget with input from faculty and community members, the facility became, as envisioned, a lively center for art and design, as well as an off-campus site for Bloomington-based design classes.

Parking Garage Walkway Renovation for Columbus Redevelopment Commission

Columbus, Indiana

A mural by local graphic design students and faculty had been installed in a dark, poorly-lit walkway that was also an important pedestrian link in downtown. The renovation remedied this, using color and pattern cues from the mural.

Kidscommons, Columbus’ Community Children’s Museum

Historic Building Renovation, Interiors and Exhibit Design

Columbus, Indiana

Multiple Projects 2003-2020

The “face” on the kids’ entrance door is an example of the numerous ways in which the building and exhibits of Kidscommons are designed to engage the primary users of the facility. The c. 1915 building, a former J.C. Penney store, was completely renovated according to accepted historic preservation standards, that included preserving interior features like the stair and tin ceilings. The new storefront replaced a later storefront, and reintroduces the tripartite storefront while introducing new materials and colors.

Exhibit designs include the Japanese House, Explora House and Climbing Façade.
